There is a great deal to like about the Nokia Lumia , and indeed I've grown quite fond of it during the weeks that its been in my care. It has a generously sized display of decent quality, a camera that is capable of capturing some really good images, excellent battery life and satisfactory performance for all but the most demanding of users.

Nokia's software offerings also add immense value to the device. This is a device aimed at the first-time smartphone buyer, however, and for that audience, I think this is a great choice - this is an admirable effort at revitalizing the low-end smartphone market. It beats its rivals - including the superior Moto E - in terms of app browsing, camera functions and gaming.

Elsewhere, however, it is let down by some crippling debilities that include a lack of popular apps and games, unnecessary built-in software and a rather dull design.

The negatives of the Lumia are rather in your face - there are some issues with the screen resolution and backlight, sluggish loading of apps, lacklustre camera facilities and Windows Phone's perennial problem of a poorly stocked app store.

But the positives are equally in your face - Windows Phone 8. With Motorola dominating this market the Nokia Lumia doesn't feel quite like the budget shining star it's designed to be. The Nokia Lumia is a cheery, low cost phone with a better camera than some bargain basement Androids. But its screen resolution is quite poor and the availability and load speed of apps are issues. If you're considering the Lumia as a first smartphone and you don't plan to buy lots of wireless accessories, these limitations might not be an issue.

However, if you're switching from Android or an iPhone, you may well be frustrated. As with other Windows Phone devices, the usual caveats apply. It's not as rich as Android and iOS when it comes to apps but the basics are pretty much covered Having said that, you won't miss much if your usage mainly comprises of email, making calls, instant messaging, social networking, consuming multimedia content and casual gaming In a way, it's a downgrade compared to the Lumia For fans of Windows Phone or anyone who fancies getting to know Microsoft's mobile OS without breaking the bank, the Nokia Lumia is an excellent choice.

The app store is still a problem though -- if you like getting new releases when your Android and iOS-toting friends do, a budget Android phone like the Moto G is still the way to go.

Designing an affordable phone is always going to have compromises. In this case, Nokia has hit on some reasonable compromises but gone too far in others. We're happy with most of the improvements we've seen in Windows Phone 8. We hope minor issues such as the always-on soft buttons are taken care of soon, and we look forward to spending more time with the Sense tools. It's nice to look at and takes good pictures, but it's otherwise a flawed device.
